3431 Employee Leaves

The Board of Education recognizes that there may be instances in which employees can not report to work and recognizes that in certain circumstances it is appropriate to provide compensation or job protection during those absences. The leave provided for in this policy is provided in conjunction with other Board leave policies, including Policy 3432 (sick leave), Policy 3430.01(FMLA), and Policy 3430 (extended leave).
A. Up to one (1) day every year may be granted at the discretion of the District Administrator for the purpose of visiting other schools or attending meetings or conferences of an educational nature. This day will be counted as an inservice day.

B. Up to five (5) days at any one time in the event of the death of a member of the teacher's immediate family or an individual that the teacher has legal guardianship over. Immediate family is defined, for this paragraph, as spouse, children, parents, brothers or sisters. In the event of the death of a grandparent, grandchild, mother/father-in-law, brother/sister-in-law, aunt or uncle, or nieces or nephews, teachers will be excused on the day of the funeral.

C. Time necessary (not required) based on information on copy of orders for persons called into temporary active duty of any unit of the U.S. Reserves or the State National Guard, provided such obligations cannot be fulfilled on days when school is not in session.

D. Other leaves of absence with pay may be granted by the district administrator for good reason.

E. Teachers shall be entitled to personal leave for three (3) days per year.
The personal leave days shall not be deducted from sick leave. A personal day is defined as any day a teacher may be absent from school for personal reasons and does not require administrative or board approval. Teachers must notify the administrator three (3) days prior to taking their personal day(s). No two (2) teachers may take the same personal day except with prior administrative approval. The personal leave may not be taken on a parent/teacher conference day, on an in-service day or on a day when open house is held, before or after a break period, on the first day of school or last week of school, unless the Superintendent grants his/her approval.

F. Staff members that miss work due to jury duty will be provided their full compensation for any time lost provided that any jury fees received by the staff member are signed over to the District.

G. Any absences taken by a professional staff member outside of those provided for in this policy shall have their salary reduced by one-one hundred and ninetieth (1/190) of their individual contract salary.
