3432 Employee Sick Leave

A. Illness: Each employee shall be credited with one (1) day of paid sick leave per month of employment to a maximum of twelve (12) days per contract year. Sick leave though credited at the beginning of each fiscal year is vested only upon completion of the work year. Any employee terminated or resigning will be credited only with those days earned at the time employment is severed. Part-time employees will receive sick leave on a pro-rated basis based upon the number of hours they are scheduled to work. Unused sick leave may be accumulated to a total of ninety-five (95) days for employees hired before January 1, 2000. Unused sick leave may be accumulated to a total of eighty (80) days for employees hired on or after January 1, 2000. Teachers shall be given a written accounting of their accumulated sick leave at the beginning of each school year. Employees absent due to illness for more than three (3) consecutive workdays or if the employee demonstrates a pattern or practice of absences, e.g. out several Mondays or Fridays, etc. may be required to furnish a doctor's statement regarding the need for additional sick leave time. Whenever the District requires a doctor's statement, the District will pay the cost of the doctor's fees not covered by insurance.
 
B. Sick leave shall be paid for any absence from work due to the:
 
1. Personal illness or injury of the employee.
 
2. Illness or injury of an employee's child under the age of eighteen (18) or at or over the age of eighteen (18) if the child has a disability as set forth in Wisconsin Administrative Code PI 11.02(2) (Examples of a disability are: Cognitive disability, learning disability, autism, etc.)
 
3. Serious health condition of a spouse, child, or parent.
 
4. Medical or dental appointments for the employee, spouse, child or parent.
 
C. Definitions: the following definitions apply under this section:
 
1. Child: means a natural, adopted, foster or treatment foster child, a stepchild or a legal ward who is less than eighteen (18) years of age or the individual is eighteen (18) years of age or older and cannot care for himself or herself because of a serious health condition.
 
2. Parent: means a natural parent, foster parent, treatment foster parent, adoptive parent, stepparent or legal guardian of an employee or an employee's spouse.
 
3. Spouse: means an employee's legal husband or wife.
 
4. Serious Health Condition: means a disabling physical or mental illness, injury, impairment or condition involving any of the following:
 
a. Inpatient care in a hospital, nursing home, or hospice.
 
b. Outpatient care that requires continuing treatment or supervision by a health care provider.
 
D. General Provisions:
 
1. Part-time teachers will receive sick days to be accumulated in proportion to their percentage of full-time employment.
 
2. Teachers absent from their work for reason of sickness or emergency shall report that absence to the school administration by 7:00 a.m. on the date that the absence occurs, unless said sickness or emergency occurs after that hour. Then notification shall be given as soon as possible thereafter.
 
3. In the event the teacher is absent for a period which exceeds the accumulated sick leave, the District shall continue to provide all insurance benefits, for a maximum of six (6) weeks from the expiration of sick leave.
 
4. Sick Leave and Long-Term Disability: In the event an employee becomes eligible for and accepts benefits under the District’s long-term disability insurance program, referred to in Article XII, Section G, the employee may not use sick leave to supplement long-term disability benefits.
